In September: Thinleaf Sunflower
The large thinleaf sunflower (Helianthus atrorubens) grows to 2.5 metres in height and has an abundance of star-shaped, yellow blossoms. A member of the Asteraceae family, it has a strong tendency to spread due to the rhizomes it sends out, requiring the plants to be thinned with a spade in the spring. In appearance and size, the thinleaf sunflower resembles the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus).
