"The wind was wonderfully fresh and invigorating"

Emil Nolde spent several months on Sylt in 1930 and went into raptures about the island with the words: “The wind was wonderfully fresh and invigorating… Going for walks by the sea on the firm sand was my great pleasure. The fresh air, the saline taste, the thunderous surge, the clouds in front and above me, the beach, the dunes, the marram grass …” But Nolde came to miss his wife Ada, his house and his garden: “Nostalgic as I was, my thoughts wandered across the Wadden Sea – over toward Seebüll.”
