Art in the foyer

Art in the foyer

With its “Art in the foyer” exhibition series, the Berlin extension offers young artists the possibility, for one month each, to use the end wall by the flight of steps for the exhibition of fine arts, sculptures, photographs or other installations, which closely relate to the exhibition shown on the first floor. The co-operation between a museum rich in tradition, like the Nolde Foundation Seebüll, and selected young artists, who are represented by renowned galleries, is unique in Berlin.

We would like to produce a visual and intellectual interaction between the works of a world famous painter like Emil Nolde and young art and thus allow the public to take part in an exciting discussion between different generations of artists and varied forms of artistic expression. By means of this project, the opportunity is to be given to the traditional museum visitor to discover by viewing how a living artist of the present reacts to an important figure of art history, orientates himself to Emil Nolde, competes with him, learns from him or contradicts him. This artistic dialogue between established painting and the current art positions should open up new viewpoints on Emil Nolde’s work. At the same time, Nolde’s work represents the traditional standard, by which contemporary art is measured.
