In June: Oriental Poppy
In early summer the poppy dominates the garden. In vibrant orange, lush deep red or tender pink, the over 50 perennial poppies glow as they did during the lifetime of the painter, who took great joy in their varied colours and immortalized them in numerous watercolours and paintings. After the poppies have bloomed their seed pods remain standing on the stems, for the seeds must ripen within the elegantly shaped poricidal capsules. Strong gusts of wind catapult the little poppy seeds out, sowing the next crop. In the Botanicum and the Museum Shop, hand-harvested poppy seeds from the historic Nolde Garden can be purchased for your flower beds and flower pots at home.
